We value every pocket watch on two separate bases: the precious metal in its case and the horological interest of its movement and maker. The two can be very different figures, and telling them apart is where real knowledge matters. You are always paid on whichever is higher, so you are never short-changed on a fine watch sold as scrap, nor caught out melting something a collector would have paid a premium for.

How We Value a Pocket Watch

Every pocket watch has a floor and a ceiling. The floor is its scrap value — the weight of gold or silver in the case, priced against the live market rate. The ceiling is what a collector will pay, which depends on the maker, the movement, any complication, the condition of the dial and case, and whether the watch is complete and running.

We assess both. We weigh and test the case, read its hallmarks to confirm the metal and date it, and examine the movement — its jewel count, whether it is a fusee or a going-barrel, lever or cylinder, key-wound or keyless — and the maker's name and serial number to attribute and date it properly. Then we explain which figure applies to your watch and how we reached it. There is never any pressure to sell, and the valuation is completely free.

Gold, Silver, and Gunmetal Cases

Most antique pocket watches are cased in 18ct or 9ct gold, sterling silver, or gunmetal, and the case alone often carries real value. English cases are hallmarked, so we can confirm the metal and the year at a glance, while American factory watches are frequently "gold-filled" or rolled gold — a thin layer of gold over base metal that we always test for rather than assume. A heavy gold hunter has genuine bullion weight before any collector premium is added; a silver half-hunter is valued on its sterling content and its maker. Hunter, Half-Hunter, and Open-Face

Pocket watches are described by their case style, and each has its own appeal. A full hunter has a hinged metal lid that snaps shut over the dial to protect it; a half-hunter (sometimes called a Napoleon) has a small glazed window in the lid so you can read the approximate time without opening it; and an open-face watch has no cover at all. Double hunters and double half-hunters open at both front and back. Smaller ladies' fob and pendant watches, often beautifully engraved, were worn on a brooch or chain rather than in a pocket. Every style is welcome, in any condition.

English Fusee and Early Movements

The earliest watches we buy use a fusee — a cone-shaped pulley that evens out the pull of the mainspring as it unwinds — and are key-wound and key-set rather than wound by the crown. Verge, cylinder, and later English lever escapements all pass through our hands regularly. A signed English fusee movement by a respected maker can be worth considerably more than the silver case that houses it, which is precisely why we never melt a watch that is worth more whole. We open the case, study the movement, and value the mechanism on its own merits.

Maker-Named, Railway, and Military Watches

A maker's name lifts a watch well above scrap. Established English names such as J.W. Benson, Thomas Russell, and Dent, the great American factories — Waltham, Elgin, Hamilton, and Illinois — and Swiss houses like Omega, Longines, and IWC all have dedicated followings. Railway-grade watches, built to strict accuracy standards and sometimes issued by the railway companies themselves, are collected in their own right, as are military-issued watches carrying broad-arrow marks and service engravings. Where your watch carries a name that matters, we recognise it and price accordingly.

Repeaters, Chronographs, and Complications

The most valuable pocket watches do more than tell the time. A minute repeater chimes the hours, quarters, and minutes on demand; chronographs time intervals; and calendar, moonphase, and rare karrusel or tourbillon movements are prized by collectors worldwide. Any of these complications can be worth many times the value of the watch's metal. If you suspect your watch chimes, has additional subdials, or does anything beyond showing the time, tell us when you book — these are the pieces where expert assessment makes the greatest difference to what you are paid.

Albert Chains, Fobs, and Accessories

The accessories are worth selling too. A single or double Albert chain in 9ct gold or sterling silver is valued on its own weight and quality, and T-bars, fob seals, watch keys, and presentation cases all add to the total. Working, Broken, or Without Papers

A pocket watch does not need to run to be worth selling. The gold or silver in the case holds its value whatever the movement is doing, and a broken watch by a good maker is actively wanted by collectors and restorers as a spares-or-repair piece. Missing glass, a cracked enamel dial, a snapped chain, or a movement that has not turned in years — none of these stop us making a fair offer. You will never need the original box, key, or paperwork; we verify everything from the watch itself.
