How do you work out what my scrap gold is worth?

Scrap gold is priced purely on its weight and carat purity against the live spot rate, with nothing deducted for cosmetic condition. We weigh each item on certified scales and test its carat, then show you the calculation: grams multiplied by the per-gram rate for that carat. A snapped 18ct chain and an intact 18ct chain of the same weight are worth exactly the same to us.

How do you test scrap gold for purity?

For hallmarked pieces we confirm the stamp, then verify with acid testing or, for mixed and unmarked lots, an XRF analyser that reads the precise metal content without damaging the item. This matters most with unhallmarked scrap, gold-plated pieces, and dental alloys, where the gold content can differ sharply from what it looks like.

Do different carats pay out differently?

Yes — higher carat means more pure gold per gram and therefore a higher payout per gram. 9ct gold is 37.5% pure, 18ct is 75%, and 22ct is 91.6%. We sort your scrap by carat and price each group separately so a few high-carat pieces are never dragged down by lower-carat items in the same lot.

Is there a minimum amount of scrap gold you will buy?

Sort by carat. We separate 9ct, 14ct, 18ct, and 22ct pieces, because each is a different proportion of pure gold and therefore a different price per gram.
Weigh on certified scales. Each carat group is weighed individually in front of you on calibrated, traceable scales.
Apply the live rate. We work from the current spot price at the moment of valuation, so the offer reflects what the metal is genuinely worth that day.

Testing: Hallmarks, Acid, and XRF

Plenty of scrap gold has no hallmark — old foreign pieces, worn stamps, fragments, and dental gold rarely carry a clear UK mark. Rather than guess, we test. Hallmarked items are confirmed against the stamp; everything else is acid-tested or scanned with an XRF analyser that reads the exact metal composition without cutting or damaging the piece. This protects you as much as us: it means a piece that looks like low-carat scrap but is actually high-carat gold gets paid at its true rate, and gold-plated base metal is identified honestly rather than paid for as solid.
